Welcome to the February 2025 Newsletter!
February may be a short month, but it was packed with progress on our software development initiatives and FreeBSD advocacy efforts. Check out our update on the Foundation-sponsored RAID-Z Expansion Project and see how its flexible storage helps users. Get the latest news on the June 2025 FreeBSD Developer Summit and BSDCan 2025, and learn what’s new with the Laptop Support and Usability Project. OpenZFS RAID-Z Expansion: A New Era in Storage Flexibility

ZFS has proven itself to be a reliable and trustworthy filesystem over many years of use. Its RAID-Z level, an advanced form of RAID-5, had a major flaw in its initial implementation: users couldn’t add disks to a RAID-Z array. There was no easy way to expand it after initial creation, which meant creating a new array and copying data. Now FreeBSD has implemented the solution with the addition of RAID-Z expansion.

BSDCan 2025 Travel Grants and FreeBSD Developer Summit CFP

The Travel Grant Application for the FreeBSD Developer Summit/BSDCan 2025 is now open. The Foundation can help you attend BSDCan and the Dev Summit through our travel grant program. Travel grants are available to FreeBSD developers and advocates who need assistance with travel expenses for attending conferences related to FreeBSD development.

Co-located with BSDCan in Ottawa, Canada, the June 2025 FreeBSD Developer Summit will feature presentations and working group sessions focused on advancing FreeBSD. Join us June 11-12 to shape the future of FreeBSD! This is a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow developers and contribute to the growth of the FreeBSD community.

January 2025 Laptop Support and Usability Project Update

The FreeBSD Foundation’s January 2025 report on the Laptop Support and Usability Project is now on GitHub. Key updates include work on power management for better battery life, development of faster WiFi support, and progress on USB webcam integration. Full details are available in the GitHub repository.

FreeBSD Status Report Fourth Quarter 2024

The fourth and final 2024 status report, containing 44 entries, highlights an exceptionally successful and productive year for the community. Despite the typical end-of-year slowdown, significant progress and deliverables were achieved across various projects.

This case study examines how NYI has successfully leveraged FreeBSD’s open source flexibility and performance over a twenty-five year period, enjoying deep levels of control, security and accountability. The analysis includes NYI’s early adoption of FreeBSD as a foundation for its infrastructure, the ongoing use of FreeBSD in the running of internal NYI systems and managed services, and the evolution of the strategic partnership with the FreeBSD Project.

Zero-Trust Builds for FreeBSD

The Foundation is pleased to announce that a planned project to deliver zero-trust builds has begun in January 2025. This project is a key component of the work commissioned by the Sovereign Tech Agency (STA) and is one of five initiatives that together are aimed at advancing Zero Trust builds, Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), CI/CD automation, security controls in Ports and Packages, and technical debt reduction.

Laptop Support and Usability Project Update: First Monthly Report & Community Initiatives

The FreeBSD Foundation’s Laptop Support and Usability Project is in full swing, and staying updated has never been easier. The first monthly report is now available. The full report contains progress updates on supported laptop models, desktop environments, and technical debt work.

Enhancing Network Management by Switching from Linux to FreeBSD: The Metify Approach

Metify was running on Linux but needed added stability and the ability to tune a kernel for performance. It also needed tight ZFS integration and ports and packages it could depend on, which Linux lacks. Finally, Metify wanted enhanced security out-of-the-box, open, uncomplicated, and unchanging licensing, and comprehensive documentation.

FreeBSD at EuroBSDCon 2024: Developer Perspectives on Networking, Security, and Community Impact

EuroBSDCon 2024 in Dublin, Ireland, gathered BSD developers and community members to discuss open source innovation. With support from the FreeBSD Foundation, several FreeBSD developers participated, facilitating technical discussions and collaborations that underscored FreeBSD’s impact on enterprise and open source development.

Full FreeBSD Code Audit Report Released

In March 2024, the FreeBSD Foundation received a 2024 Alpha-Omega Grant to conduct code audits of important subsystems. The audit was performed by the offensive security firm Synactiv, and their report, along with a comprehensive analysis of the findings and resulting actions, is now available.

Cloud Native Containers Tested on FreeBSD

In September and October 2024, the FreeBSD OCI Runtime Extension Working Group conducted a time-limited testing program for its experimental implementation of Podman on FreeBSD. A small group of participants supported this testing and provided feedback on their experiences. We extend our gratitude to Doug Rabson for his ongoing contributions to the FreeBSD OCI Runtime Extension.

Laptop and Desktop Working Group to form in December

The first meeting of this new working group is due to be held in mid-December. The Laptop and Desktop Workgroup (LDWG) is a platform for the community to collaborate on development, testing, knowledge exchange, and advocacy for FreeBSD on laptops and desktops. Everyone interested in these use cases is encouraged to attend the meetings. More information can be found on the wiki page, which contains all details about the group and how to join the planned meetings.
